The IntraUterine Device (IUD) is a birth control method that is implanted in the uterus. This device is over 99 percent effective and is one of the leading options for women who want a long-term birth control solution. There are 2 kinds of IUDs, the copper IUD (ParaGard) and the hormone IUD (either Mirena or Skyla.) ParaGard prevents pregnancy for as long as 10 years, Skyla prevents pregnancy for 3 years, and Mirena prevents pregnancy for 5 years.
